The Science Behind Doggie Radio
We at Pioneer Vet Clinic have personally witnessed the positive effects of Doggie Radio in our clinic. Not only has it helped us manage patient anxiety, stress, and wellbeing, but it has also had a positive effect on our veterinary staff. After reading through articles and the literature available, our experience and perceived evaluations are backed by science.
There is research available that shows music in veterinary medicine can improve an animal’s experience in the exam room, surgery suite, treatment areas, wards, and boarding facilities. An interesting study on anesthetized cats showed that classical music and pop music (easy listening) had a positive effect on the autonomic nervous system. The study concluded that playing music such as the music played on Doggie Radio in the surgical suite may allow for reduction of anesthetic doses, therefore increasing patient safety and decreasing chances for unwanted side effects. Another study showed that playing music during veterinary examinations lower patient temperature, and numerous studies have agreed that music can impact specific behaviors and physiological factors associated with canine stress in hospitalized and kenneled dogs. The right music at the right volume can affect heart rate, levels of vocalization, and time spent resting all parameters used to evaluate stress levels in dogs. Using music as a means of enrichment and therapy for veterinary patients is even endorsed by the Fear Free organization. If music like Doggie Radio can do this for the patient at the veterinary clinic, imagine what it could do for the pet at home.
Music is not just for the dogs at Doggie Radio. Music in the workplace has shown to improve employee mood, reduce stress, and increase productivity. In the human health care world, a 2020 study showed that music could decrease occupational stress and burn-out, two hot topics in the veterinary world. Music can also impact our clients. A study has shown that music can have a positive effect on owner satisfaction in the veterinary clinic. Doggie Radio can help improve staff performance and mental health while being a positive influence on your clients.

The Science Behind Doggie Radio
Several scientific studies have investigated the effects of music on dogs, focusing on stress reduction and behavioral changes. Key findings include:
-
Classical Music's Calming Influence: Research indicates that classical music can promote relaxation in dogs. A study published in Physiology & Behavior observed that dogs exposed to classical music spent more time lying down and less time barking, suggesting reduced stress levels. Academia.edu
-
Impact of Music in Veterinary Settings: A study in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association examined the effects of classical music during veterinary visits. The findings suggested that playing classical music at a low volume could improve owner satisfaction with the visit, although the direct impact on dogs' anxiety levels required further research. AVMA Journals
-
Behavioral Responses to Different Music Genres: Research published in Animals explored how various music genres affect kenneled dogs. The study found that dogs exhibited more relaxed behaviors when exposed to soft rock and reggae compared to other genres, indicating that the type of music plays a role in stress reduction. MDPI
-
Music Therapy for Chronically Stressed Dogs: A case study from Texas Christian University investigated the use of music to manage chronic stress in dogs with cognitive dysfunction syndrome. The results suggested that musical enrichment might reduce certain stress-related behaviors, though outcomes varied among individual dogs. TCU Repository
-
Influence of Music Pitch and Tempo: A study in Animals examined how different pitches and tempos of music affect kenneled dogs' behavior. Low-pitch tracks increased alertness, potentially due to associations with certain vocalizations, indicating that specific musical elements can influence canine responses. MDPI
These studies collectively suggest that music, particularly classical genres, can have a calming effect on dogs, potentially reducing stress and promoting relaxation. However, individual responses may vary, and further research is needed to fully understand the implications and optimize music therapy for canine welfare.
